RJF Fall Simplicity Workshop

whole roasted yellow eye rockfish

whole roasted yellow eye rockfish

My Husband Michael and I have built a thriving and exciting business helping our clients achieve stunning imagery of food for magazines, publishers, and nationally recognized brands.  We create recipes and photograph daily for our clients.

Come work alongside the Rustic Joyful Food team at the Fall Food Styling & Photography Workshop on October 1st, 2016 in NEW YORK CITY!  We chose Karen Mordechai's stunning Sunday Suppers studio in Brooklyn.

We provide the freshest, best seasonal ingredients.  During the spring workshop we had the most amazing yellow eye rockfish (pacific red snapper) flown from Alaska to showcase the art of roasting whole fish.

Β

New York City represents hope, dreams that came from nothing, and opportunity.  We wanted this mighty backdrop for our workshop.  I am so excited and looking forward to this workshop focused on cooking and styling with my attendees in a relaxed and inspired environment.

If you don't have a camera, we will provide a DSLR for you to shoot with during your time.

I am a food writer, author, and food stylist.  I teach cooking segments on television here in Seattle, and I have a true love for creating brilliant food on and off camera.  As always, cooking is my first love and passion.  We will cook together as a class, delving into the bounty of summer's end and what the East Coast has to offer.  Then, we will be styling and photographing our creations.   Flowers are an important part of styling, so we will have flowers available for your settings.  The entire session will provide hands-on, detailed instruction as well as freestyle time for you to really express yourself and explore your own voice in food styling and photography.  This day is designed to help you grow as an artist and creative.  The experience will provide beautiful images for your businesses, blogs, and portfolios.  We will discuss linens, prop selection, color, light, camera angles, and all of the important elements of the desired aesthetic you and your clients are looking to achieve. You won't just leave with encouragement, industry knowledge, a full spirit, and some new friendships -- you'll receive your own food stylist's kit, chock full of the tools of the trade, prepared especially for you to take your food styling skills up a notch.

Jeff Hobson will be at the helm teaching the creative portion of the photography.  He comes to this team with immense industry knowledge and an impressive client roster.  Having worked for clients like Wolfgang Puck, Jeff knows how to attract your perfect client and build a lasting relationship with them.  His resume is filled with major brands in the commercial industry, many of which you know and love.

Michael Kartes will be delving into the technical portion of the class and working with natural light to create shadows, depth, and a storyline in your work.  Michael produces stunning imagery for cookbooks, magazines, and editorial layouts.

We'd be honored and thrilled to have you join us!  Meet with likeminded creatives in an amazing space where we'll eat, drink, style, photograph, and manage to have an incredibly fun time that you won't want to miss. For more details and to register, click here.

Fall Simplicity Workshop

Overview

A cooking class, a stunningly designed communal lunch, and a photography workshop combined, come enjoy a hands-on and community look at food styling and photography. Learn a fresh and thoughtful approach to cooking and artfully presenting food for photography. This workshop will be a wonderful experience with an element of luxury.  Whether you're a food styling novice hoping to launch your fabulous blog, or a seasoned pro looking to further your career, this Fall Simplicity Workshop is for you.   All questions will be welcomed and answered thoroughly by your hosts, who have over 20 years of combined experience in the field.  We want you to find your artistic voice!   Each attendee will receive a professional headshot photo and specially curated gifts from local makers. A unique highlight of this workshop will be the communal meal shared amongst all upon the close of the workshop.  Every portion of the day will be a stunning photo opportunity for your portfolio.

What to Expect

Upon arrival at 11 am, you will be greeted with light snacks and libations.  Have a chance to mingle with the other attendees as we begin the cooking portion of the workshop.  This will be a classroom style setting as we cook our Fall-inspired local menu.  Shaved fennel salad with dill and pear; parsnip and celeriac soup with roasted chanterelles and truffle butter bread crumbs; and braised short ribs drenched in wine, accompanied by roasted radishes, from my book Rustic Joyful Food (http://www.amazon.com/Rustic-Joyful-Food-Hearts-Table/dp/1634439163).  While the cooking is happening, light lectures regarding cooking, technique, lighting, composition, and finding your own style will commence.  We want to share our style, but we are more passionate about you finding your voice through the art of cooking and photography.  We will discuss plating, portions, natural and artificial lighting scenarios, and flash.  We will touch on product photography but stay in the natural plated vein.  You will get a chance to discuss gear, and this will segue into breaking up for one-on-one time shooting.  We will set the table together to enjoy lunch and discuss further as the workshop comes to a close.  During this time, you will also have a headshot photo taken for your own personal use.  This workshop will not only be informative and give you the tools you need to grow your business, but we adore life so this is an unfussy, joyful real time to be had.  No question is silly, and talking is encouraged.
